Workshop on 6 December, 1-4 p.m.
Marina Lauwers was born in 1965 in Mortsel and lives and works in Merksem, Belgium.
She graduated in 1989 from the Sint Maria Institute with a specialization in free graphics. In addition, she attended a workshop in Japanese woodblock printing in 1989 and a sculpture course in 1995. Later, Marina also studied music theory and composition at the Academy in Schoten. She has used this knowledge extensively in the creation of her animated films.
The work invites the viewer to take a look into the world of Alice, the famous Alice who falls into a well and ends up in a strange world full of chance encounters.
This Alice has no face, no eyes—she doesn’t need them because it is her imagination that conjures up the images. This is the magic of imagination.
Alice has given up being who she is; she lost her way and keeps falling, deeper and further into a world without rhythm, without landmarks. In her mind, she can do anything—travel through time, her time, sometimes fast, sometimes slowing down.
Along the way, she encounters her own loneliness and fears, at first still shrouded in the darkness of the long journey, but as her mind grows accustomed to the dark, everything begins to appear lighter, more colorful, yet also more confronting. A collection of false truths, unspoken thoughts, and faded dreams. Losing everything is not always so simple. And what if it’s not entirely her fault? In her mind, a children's song keeps playing: "In the forest, there stands a little house, I looked through the windowpane, a little hare came running, knocked on the door, help me, help me in distress for the hunter will shoot me dead, let me in your little house, I will be grateful, I will be grateful, I will be grateful…."
Join us for a free workshop and presentation by Colombian art collective MIRADAS on December 7, 2024, at 1:30 p.m.
The Miradas Collective is a documentary photography initiative dedicated to promoting peace in Colombia through the power of visual narrative. It is made up of people committed to peacebuilding, including peace signatories and community leaders.
The activity coincides with Marina's exhibition, and together they create a thoughtful connection between themes of self-discovery through life's challenges and emotions, and ideas of resilience, community, empowerment, and peace-building.
Workshop participants will learn how art becomes a tool for social storytelling. This activity is sponsored by the European Union Delegation in Colombia and the Embassy of Colombia to Belgium.
